Obituary

Westbrook – Barbara E. Champagne, 89, passed away on April 6, 2017, in Westbrook. She was born in Bridgton, on March 22, 1928, the daughter of Howard and Martha (Johnson) Parsons. Barbara was a 1946 graduate of Gorham High School. After school, she worked for a few years in the sorting department at the SD Warren Mill. It was at the mill where she met her future husband, Raymond Champagne. The couple were married in 1949, and together they raised their two children in Westbrook. They were active in the VFW, Barbara being a member of the Auxiliary. She was also a member the of the North St. Methodist Church for many years, and would often volunteer her time helping at their bean suppers. A large part of Barbara's life was her family. She enjoyed being around them, from family cookouts and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren to taking car trips to visit her aunts and uncles. She also helped out at the family farm, spending time with her niece and nephews. Barbara enjoyed traveling to Florida, bowling, Beano and knitting mittens to keep everyone warm. Barbara would brighten up any room she walked into with her spunky personality. Barbara is survived by her children, Michael Champagne and wife Jean, and Peggy Douglass and husband John, all of Gorham; grandchildren, Lisa Woodsum and husband Nic of Gorham, Alison Morrell of Gorham, Dana Champagne and wife Allison of Gorham, Scott Douglass and fiancée Michelle of South Portland, Jeffrey Douglass and wife Jamie of Gorham, and Kimberly Douglass of Boston, MA; great grandchildren, Wyatt Woodsum, Evan Morrell, Benjamin Champagne, Riley Wilhelm, Elizabeth Douglass and Emmaline Douglass; and brother, Arthur Parsons of Gorham. In addition to her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her husband in 2012. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all the staff at the Springbrook Center in Westbrook, for all the kind and compassionate care they gave to Barbara. A graveside service will be celebrated at 3pm, on Saturday, May 13, at the North St. Cemetery, on Fort Hill Rd., in Gorham. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. Memorial donations in Barbara's honor may be made to your local VFW or to the Deering Memorial Post 6859, 687 Forest Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
