Obituary

Audrey Lorton Libbey passed away on February 21, 2016. Audrey was born in Los Angeles, California. She later told her children that they lived below the famous Hollywood sign, before it was changed from "Hollywoodland." She attended the University of Southern California, where she became involved in fundraising for children. A movie lover, Audrey spent some time working at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. She kept an autograph book of the stars who came into the theater. Later, she worked at an airline in Hawaii. In 1959, Audrey married John Libbey, publisher of Tri Ocean Books. By the early 1960s the couple moved to Libbey's home town of Lewiston, Maine, where he joined the family business. While living in Auburn, Audrey became active in volunteer work. A lover of the arts, especially the theater, she worked to introduce students to live theater. In the early 1990s, Audrey moved to the Portland area. There she was near her three grandchildren, to whom she was devoted. She also traveled extensively, and especially enjoyed the time she spent in Italy. Wherever she went, Audrey loved to be near the ocean. Her grandson Michael, on hearing of her passing, said "I'll think of her now as being always at the beach." Audrey is survived by children Kathleen Libbey of Springvale, Maine; Barbara Libbey McEvoy and husband John McEvoy of Portland, Maine; grandchildren Krystal, Amber, and Michael; and two great-grandchildren. In memory of Audrey, donations may be made to: Maine Historical Society Libbey Fund 498 Congress Street Portland, ME 04101
