Gorham- Arthur Austin Quint, 84, formerly of Westbrook, passed away on August 21, 2018 at the Gorham House, where he had been a resident for two years. Art was born on August 3, 1934 in New Gloucester, Maine, the son of Clarence M. and Minerva L. (Hadley) Quint. After graduating from Pennell Institute in Gray, Maine in 1951, he joined the United States Air Force and served for 10 years. During his time in the Air Force, Art often drove the school bus for children on the air base. He also had the opportunity to provide transportation for some special passengers. On one occasion he brought Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day from Morocco to Gibraltar to visit with some of the troops stationed there. He also had the pleasure of driving President Dwight Eisenhower from Bangor to a northern Maine fishing camp. In relating the experience to family members, he mentioned how carefully he was trying to drive over the very bumpy dirt roads. Apparently, President Eisenhower told him to speed up because he wanted to go fishing. When they reached the camp, they were greeted by Art's father, who was stocking the lake with plenty of fish from the fish hatchery. He married Carol C. Tibbetts on August 25, 1956 and they raised four children. They were married for almost 57 years before she passed away in 2013. After leaving the Air Force, the family moved to Westbrook where he worked for Colonial Bowling Academy and Burns Fencing before joining the Westbrook Fire Department as a full-time driver. He later served as a Volunteer Firefighter with Ladder 1 in Westbrook for 15 years and ended his career as a member of the Fire-Police. Art became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal service in 1966 and retired in 1989. Following his retirement, he worked for both G.H. Bass and NorDx Laboratories. Although he did not remain a full-time firefighter, that was his true passion. He served as president of the Cumberland County Firemen's Association. He also served as Vice President of Cumberland County West, Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters for 25 years and was secretary of the Fire Buff's Association for 22 years. Many people will remember his personal fire museum, located in the family garage, that contained memorabilia he began collecting when he first joined the fire department. Art and Carol enjoyed sharing their love of camping with their children. Family vacations included many New England campgrounds as well as longer trips to New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. After the children were grown, they took many trips to the Maritime Provinces. In addition to camping, Art and Carol made two trips to Alaska and traveled by train across the Canadian Provinces. He was predeceased by his wife Carol and his sister, Roberta Elaine Jones. He is survived by his children and their wonderfully blended families; David Quint of Florida, his son, Graham Quint and his wife, Mina; Susan Adams and her husband, David, of Saco and their children, Daniel Adams and his wife Katie, of Lincoln; Benjamin Adams and his wife Gwen, and their daughter Quinn, of Saco; Laurie Quint and her partner Patti Montes of Virginia; Bruce Quint and his wife, Denise, of Gorham and their children, Whitney Quint and her son, Trenton Kidder, Ryan Quint and his wife, Joanna, of Virginia, and Erin Christiansen of Colorado; and a niece and nephew. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Gorham House , especially his former daughter-in-law, Nancy Mash, and to Compassus Hospice for the exceptional loving care and support provided. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 2-4 PM at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 35 Church St. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Westbrook- Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. Westbrook. Interment will follow with military honors at Woodlawn Cemetery, Stroudwater St. Westbrook. A reception will follow services in the church fellowship hall.
