Obituary

WINDHAM – Arlene J. Tyler, 97, of Windham passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was born on May 21, 1919, the oldest of 7 children of Fred B. Sr. and Helen Jordan. Arlene was a lifelong resident of Windham graduating from Windham High School in 1938. She met her husband when his family moved from Portland to Windham subsequently getting married to Ammon M. Tyler in July of 1940. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor he left the Merchant Marines to join the US Navy. Arlene like many in the area went to work in the South Portland shipyards for the duration of the war. Her son Thomas was born in October of 1947. For several years after the war she worked part time at several local businesses then in 1955 she went to work for the US Postal Service in North Windham office until her retirement in 1985. An active member of North Windham Union Church for most of her life, sang in the choir and worked many a bean supper. Arlene was also a member of the Land o' Lakes Garden Club for many years. She was a strong supporter of Windham's sports teams watching grandchildren (James and Julie) at whatever they participated in going to games as often as possible. Many of the young people of the area know her simply as Grammy Arlene. Then when her great granddaughter came along more reason to follow sports attending some of her events. Even when she was no longer able to attend events she read the paper every day to see how the Windham teams made out. One of her most favorite places on earth was Walt Disney World in Florida. She loved her several trips there especially when her son and his wife, granddaughter and grandson were all there with her. Even when she was not able to go back, she wanted to see lots of pictures of anyone's trip to Disney. A very special thank you to Casco Residential Inn and Maine Medical Center for their compassionate care since this past January. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Helen Jordan, her brothers, Fred Jordan, Jr., Malcolm Jordan, Philip Jordan, and Dana Jordan. Surviving are her son Thomas Tyler and his wife Sandra of Windham; grandson James Tyler and his wife Rebecca of Vienna, VA; granddaughter Julie Files of Windham; great grandchildren Taylor Files of Windham, Sarah Grace Tyler and Joshua Thomas Tyler of Vienna, VA. Also surviving are her two sisters Ervette Strange of Windham and Patricia Jacobs of Euharlee, GA along with many nieces and nephews.
