Arlene Beverly (Hall) Black, age 97, passed peacefully on May 2, 2026 at her homestead where she had resided for 77 years in the North Deering area of Portland. Arlene, affectionately known by all as “Grammie”, resided in Maine her entire life. The daughter of Irasen Lloyd Hall and Emma (Webster) Hall, she was born at home in Gray and raised on a farm in Pownal. At the age of 19, she met and married Lloyd S. C. Black Jr. and moved to their Portland home where they raised their four children. She enjoyed being a homemaker, gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting and going on adventures with her children and grandchildren. Her wit and sense of humor were unmatched. Spending time with family was her greatest joy.
Arlene was predeceased by her parents, siblings Arthur and Donald, husband, eldest son Joseph Black, and sons-in-law J. Garrie Murray and John P Segee. She is survived by her children Lloyd S. C. Black, III and wife Elizabeth; Debra L Murray; Ira A. Black and wife Joie; and daughter-in-law Lorene Black. She is also survived by her grandchildren Wesley, Kimberly, Courtney, Erica, Camden, Michael, Kirsten, and their spouses, as well as eleven great-grandchildren. Grammie leaves behind many loving relatives and friends.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Grammie’s hospice nurses, aides, and volunteer who became family while providing many months of loving care.
Funeral arrangements by Dolby, Blais & Segee, 35 Church Street, Westbrook.
Visitation on Friday, May 15th, 4-5 pm, followed by funeral service at 5 pm.
A celebration of life will immediately follow the service at Sebago Brewing Co., 616 Main Street, Gorham. Burial will be Saturday, May 16th, 10:00 am, Pine Grove Cemetery, North Yarmouth.
In lieu of flowers, Grammie would be pleased if you donated to your local animal shelter.
Be like Grammie and remember to spread joy, kindness, and laugh every day!
