Obituary

WINDHAM-- Anthony "Tony" Ackerman, 94, of Windham, Maine passed away peacefully on March 15, 2018. Tony was born on April 1, 1923 in Garfield, NJ to George Ackerman and Rosalie Ackerman Stark. Tony graduated from Garfield High School in 1941 and went on to further his education at Boston University for Education, where he earned his Masters in Special Education. Tony started and ended his illustrious 40-year career as an educator at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA. At Perkins, he was the director of drama club, adapted and authored plays for the blind, taught English and English Literature, was head of a cottage where he oversaw students that lived on campus, and took students on multiple trips to New York City. At Perkins, he made life long friends and met the love of his life, Erma. Tony married Erma M (Roach) Ackerman on June 28, 1980, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Watertown, MA. After retiring from Perkins, Tony and Erma moved to Windham, Maine. Erma passed away in November 29, 1986. Tony dedicated his life to serving others. He was a member of the Watertown Lions Club and Windham Lions Club for 46 years, where he started the annual Stuff the Bus in Windham. Tony held many positions in the Lions and won numerous awards including: Melvin Jones Award, President of the Year and Secretary of the Year through District 41, to name a few. Tony was on the board of directors for Maine Center for the Blind, now Iris Network, in Portland, Maine; where the dining room is named after him. Former Deacon of the Windham Baptist Church, enjoyed attending local community suppers with his friend of 13+ years, Oley Kline. Tony enjoyed traveling with friends, Clyde Ricker and Marty Gavin, out of the country to explore and experience new cultures of England, Scotland, Ireland, and China. He loved telling the story of kissing the Blarney Stone. Tony enjoyed spending his time listening to all genres of music and had a large collection. Tony was preceded in death by his loving sister, Dorothy Ackerman Fletcher and his surviving relatives are: brother- in-law Frank Fletcher; nephew Gregg Fletcher, his wife Cindy, great- nephews Jeffery and Robert; Niece Gail Mrozak, her husband Jerome, great-nephews Neal, Steven, and Daniel, and a great-grand nephew and niece. Friends and caregivers Robert Simmons of Windham, Jessica Simmons of Gray, and Oley Kline of Gray helped and support him for many years. We wish to thank VNA Home Health and Hospice, Home Instead, The Girls at Home, and Birchwoods at Canco for their care and support of Tony. A period of visitation will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Dolby Blais & Segee, 434 River Road, Windham, Maine from 2pm to 3pm with memorial service starting at 3. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Windham Lions Club, PO Box 448 Windham, ME, 04062.
