Obituary

Gorham – Ann Bachelder Moody, 83, died peacefully, comforted by her loving family, on August 28, 2016, at the Gorham House, Gorham, Maine. Ann was born in Portland, on July 28, 1933, the daughter of Henry L. and Ella Hannaford Bachelder. She grew up in Gorham with her parents and 6 siblings, and graduated from Gorham High School in 1951 where she was a star athlete in softball, swimming, and basketball (Captain). She was the "Foul Shooting Champ" her junior year. In her senior year, Ann won the title of Maine's "Apple Queen", and was crowned "Apple Annie". She represented Maine at prominent events including the Cherry Blossom Festival at the White House in Washington D.C. She was blessed with many talents including her passions for writing, theater, dancing, music, and song. Ann performed with the Portland Players, and delighted family and friends with her unique monologues and poems. She had a sharp and wonderful sense of humor that permeated and sustained her and others her entire life. She sang in the church choir and eventually sang jazz and the blues professionally with her friend Ann Searcy. Ann was a self-employed beautician, working out of her home in Gorham to support her three children as a single Mom. She later worked as a hair stylist for Hay & Peabody (Portland) and Neal and York Funeral Homes (Gorham), and as an instructor at the Mansfield Beauty Academy. After retiring from cosmetology, Ann studied at the University of Southern Maine and worked in real estate "flipping houses" long before it became a popular business. She had a special eye for tasteful decorating on a tight budget. Among her favorite leisure passions were playing cribbage with family and affectionately following the Boston Red Sox and Celtics, rarely missing a televised game. More than anything else, Ann's greatest joy was being a mother and she was truly amazing at it. Her unconditional love, devotion, and support of her children with their own diverse interests and careers shaped and inspired them --and will continue forever. Ann's love spread far beyond family. Her house open to all, she was an admired mother to more than just her own. Ann is survived by her children: Thad Moody and wife Roxanne of Gorham, Kim Moody and husband Gordy Scannell of Pownal, and Shawn Moody and wife Christina of Gorham; grandchildren: Christopher, Tasha, and Heather Moody, Stanis and Elise Moody-Roberts; Danielle, James, Benjamin, and Nathan Moody; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ann is predeceased by her siblings, Robert Bachelder, Shirley Lee, Richard Bachelder, Marguerite (Mimi) DeRoche, Mary Murchie, and Ted Bachelder. A public visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 76 State Street, Gorham. At a later date, there will be a memorial gathering of extended family followed by a burial ceremony at the Eastern Cemetery in Gorham. The family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation for the loving and compassionate care received while Ann lived many years at the Inn at Village Square and her last year at the Gorham House, both in Gorham. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Ann's memory to the Gorham House, 50 New Portland Rd., Gorham, ME 04038 or to the Inn at Village Square, 123 School St., Gorham, ME 04038.
