Obituary

WINDHAM – Alys Eleanor Miele, 92, of Depot Street passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Ledgewood Manor in Windham, with her husband at her side. She was born in South Portland on March 19, 1924, one of five children to Leo and Florence (Stevens) Sampson. Alys was a 1941 graduate of South Portland High School. She worked at the Shipyard as a burner, cutting steel plates during the war. She worked at W. T. Grant's store, Union Mutual Insurance Co., and Community Oil. She co-owned and worked along side her husband at Patsy's store. After retiring from the Store, she began a daycare, which she ran until 2006. Alys met her future husband, Robert P. Miele on a blind date and they were married on November 10, 1962. Despite always working 7-days a week, Alys always provided excellent nightly meals for her family. She loved baking especially whoopie pies, needhams and Boston crème pie. She was the biggest cheerleader and supporter of her children. Alys belonged to a bowling league and loved playing Beano. She also loved dress rehearsals and recitals, music, theater, dances and attending shows and concerts in the park. Her husband, Bob, was a Shriner Crazy Cop for many years; and, enjoyed their many Shriner trips to the circus, parades, and Canada. She was predeceased by her brothers, Lionel and Phillip Sampson. Surviving besides her husband of 53 years, are her step children, Mark Miele, Jonathan Miele and Tina Pomerleau; two sisters, Estelle Stirk and Shirley Giftos; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Carl Schuler for attending to Alys these past three years, and the wonderful staff at Ledgewood Manor for their loving care of Alys. Visiting hours will be held Monday, April 11, 2016 from 10:00am until 12:00noon at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham where a funeral service will follow at 12:00noon. Burial will be private. Donations in Alys' memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
