Obituary

STANDISH—Alston Ray Wormwood, 81, of Standish, died October 12, 2016 at Maine Medical Center in Portland with his loving family by his side. Alston, better known as "Al", was born on October 14, 1934, a son of Edwin F. and Velma V. (Jones) Wormwood. During his school years, Al excelled in academics, including one year at Kent's Hill School which he remembered fondly. He was a 1954 graduate of Potter Academy in Sebago and furthered his education at the University of Maine in Orono. Al enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1958; he proudly served his country for two years, during which he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Reinhard on September 12, 1959. Upon his discharge from the military, Al spent his career as a mechanical engineer working for Portland Copper, E.W. Bliss, South Worth Machine, Ruel E. Taylor, E.C. Jordan, Shape Corporation, and most recently was self-employed through his business, Al Wormwood & Associates. A man of ingenuity, Al's most recent accomplishment was a patented invention of a sheet music holder. Al was also a man of strong faith and instilled a love for God in his family. He was a member of the Cressey Road United Methodist Church in Gorham, where he held various leadership positions, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. Al also sang in the Gorham Community Chorus for more than ten years and was a member of the Masonic Harmony Lodge #38 in Gorham. An accomplished artist, Al enjoyed playing music, painting and drawing. His artwork was published with the Gunpowder Mills of Maine and is featured on the Gambo Falls Gunpowder Trail. His legacy as an artist will be remembered fondly by his grandchildren from his beloved "animal rocks". Above all, Al's biggest passion in life was his family; he will be remembered as a wise and loving patriarch who embraced life, loved learning, and laughed often. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Wormwood of Standish; children, Kevin Wormwood and his wife, Gail of Limington, Kyle Wormwood and his wife, Shelly of Standish, and Karen Vincent and her husband Jeff of Westbrook; siblings, Ron Wormwood and his wife, Marlene of Alfred, and Waverly Turgo of Portland; grandchildren, Sarah Wormwood, Bailey Wormwood, Jennifer Vincent, Ellen Warren and her husband Paul, Zachary Vincent, Avery Wormwood, and Paige Wormwood. He was predeceased by his siblings, Wildreth Burnell, Donna Lee, and Sharon Demers. A public memorial service will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the Cressey Road United Methodist Church, 81 Cressey Rd., Gorham, ME 04038. All are welcome to a reception at the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service. Burial will be private. Donations in Alston's name may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
