Obituary

WESTBROOK - Alexander Joseph Juniewicz, Jr. passed away on February 7th, 2023, after a two-month illness. Al was born at Fort Williams, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on February 21st, 1930, to Evelyn Ruth Johnson Manchester and Alexander Joseph Juniewicz, Sr. When Al was a child, his family lived in the Goddard Mansion at Fort Williams. Al enjoyed many adventures, pranks, and laughs at Fort Williams with his younger brother Arthur and older sister Harriett. His family later moved to Prides Corner in Westbrook, Maine, living next door to their Grandfather. During his teenage years, in addition to going to school, Al worked many jobs to help his family, including ice cutting on Highland Lake and fishing and lobstering on Casco Bay. Alex graduated from Westbrook High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Airforce, he was stationed in Colorado and Nome, Alaska, as an Air Traffic Controller. Al left the Air Force and returned to Maine to marry the love of his life, Thelma "Kit" Robertson. They settled in Westbrook, Maine, where they raised their two daughters and lived for the rest of their lives. Al and Kit shared 63 years of marriage together. Al graduated from Gorham State Teachers College. He enjoyed teaching Industrial Arts at Portland High School and later at Scarborough High School. He went on to be the Principal of Scarborough High School. Following his retirement from his career in education, Al worked in real estate and development for many years. Al loved being involved in the Westbrook Community. He tried to make a difference by supporting and participating in many organizations, including the Westbrook City Council, Rotary Club, Mission Possible and Greater Portland Council of Governments. He was a member of The Westbrook Congregational Church and a 60-year member of Prides Corner Church. He and Kit cherished the lifelong close friendships they made through church. He had many friends and loved being with people of all ages; he particularly loved making jokes or debating. Al had a genuine interest in understanding other people's experiences and a remarkable ability to relate to almost everyone with whom he interacted. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it, whether plowing a driveway or helping a new friend start a business. Alex spent as much time as possible enjoying the outdoors in Maine regardless of the season. He and Kit spent many beautiful summers tenting and later at their camp on Little Sebago Lake. He loved having family and friends over to enjoy the water, boating, horseshoes, and card games. The days at camp frequently began with the cinnamon song, which Al would sing while eating cinnamon donuts that he had picked up for the family, and ended with more songs around the campfire or a card game. Another favorite pastime was experiencing the beauty of Casco Bay with others. Boarding the Hatteras early with Al at the wheel for a breakfast cruise through the islands was always special. Alex could often be found cutting and splitting wood, selling Christmas trees, clearing snow, or helping his girls with yard projects. He enjoyed building and creating. Al built furniture, lamps and even a tree house for his grandkids as a Father's Day project. In his later years, he enjoyed boating on the waters of Casco Bay and Sebago Lake with his family, reading and writing poetry, weekly pool games with his pool buddies, eating out with friends and frequent lively conversation and cribbage at The Rivers Edge Deli in Westbrook. Al most enjoyed time spent with his family, who loved him dearly. Alexander was predeceased by his parents, his wife Kit Juniewicz, his sister Harriet Hofmann, and his brother Arthur Juniewicz. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Getchell and her partner, Anthony Rioux, of Portland, Maine; his daughter Cheryl Juniewicz, of Portland, ME; his granddaughter Sarah Getchell and her husband, Timothy LaBua, of Yarmouth, ME; his grandson John Alexander Getchell, of Washington D.C.; and great grandchildren Torin James and Fiadh Kit Getchell-LaBua.
