Gilbert, 79, of Windham, passed away on Tuesday, December 17th at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House surrounded by his loving family, and holding hands with the love of his life. He was born in Kents Hill, Maine on May 14, 1945, and he was raised in South Portland by his mother Theora "Teddy" (Everett) Gilbert and his stepfather Roland Gilbert, who adopted "Aldy" (as he was affectionately called by his family) when he was in grade school. He grew up first in Redbank and then in Cash Corner, where he did his best to stay out of trouble! He always loved to reminisce about his days in Redbank. He joined the Navy when he was a teenager, and he was proud of his service to our country. He was a tire salesman for most of his life starting at Yudy's Tire, moving over to Noyes Tire and ending his career at Stratham Tire. In between his days at Noyes and before his time at Stratham, he was a co-owner of Trig Wheel Balancing Company, and then he sold cars for Avis Car Rentals, followed by some very enjoyable time at Maine Mall Motors. He was a people person with a heart of gold, and he made friends wherever he went. In 1984 while employed at Noyes Tire, he met the former Peggy O'Gara (of Westbrook), and they fell in love, spending the next forty years of their lives together on Pettingill Pond in Windham, the location of many a celebration or family party. Also known as "Peg and Gil Pond". In 1992 he and Peggy got married at Point Sebago in Casco, a wedding day full of love and laughter and remembered fondly by many. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Peggy. He is also survived by his daughter Laurie Guilmet and her husband Eric of New Gloucester, his son Michael Gilbert and his wife Stephanie of Gorham, and his bonus daughter Jennifer O'Gara and her husband Greg Golliday of Standish, and by six grandchildren, Brandon Morrill, Connor Morrill, Samantha Gilbert, Trevor Gilbert, Monica (Minott) Belliveau and her husband Chris, Oceanna (Golliday) Kneeland and her husband Travis and by a great-grandchild Palmer June "PJ" Kneeland. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Kit Gilbert of Casco, ME and Florida, and by his sister-in-law Joyce Gilbert of New Castle, NH and Florida. In addition, he is survived by his mother-in-law Yvonne Spizuoco of Westbrook, his sister-in-law Patty Beliveau and her husband Matt of Westbrook, his sister-in-law Terri Kenney of Windham, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is also survived by the mother of his two children, Susan Lindsay of Windham. He was predeceased by his mother, Theora Jansen, his stepfather Roland Gilbert, his stepfather Alf Jansen, his brother Kent Gilbert, and his brother-in-law Jimmy Kenney. Visitation and a brief service will be held on Saturday January 4th from 1-3 pm at Dolby Blais & Segee, 35 Church St, Westbrook. Private interment will be held at a later date.
