Obituary

Albert Blanchard, Jr. 95, of Westbrook, ME passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, April 12, 2024 at Gorham House in Gorham, ME. When Albert was born, he weighed 2 lbs. The doctor told his mother to make Albert comfortable and did not expect him to survive the week. Family rallied around him with constant care, which included being warmed in an oven—nestled in a shoebox. When the doctor returned the following week he was shocked to see Albert's progress. Albert continued to gain strength and enjoyed an active and athletic childhood—catching pickup baseball games and ice skating on a (now non-existent) canal near his Spring Street home and on nearby Beaver Pond. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf. As a teenager, he helped support his family with his job helping a local milkman. He was a strong, reliable and conscientious worker. At age 18 he began his 43-year career at S. D. Warren Paper Mill in Westbrook. His department was responsible for coating the paper used in magazines. Handling the heavy bulk of the coated paper required strength and determination. Throughout his life and after he retired he lovingly cared for his parents, Albert Blanchard, Sr, and Emily (Dugas) Blanchard. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elizabeth and his brother George. He was uncle to eight nieces and nephews, and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A visit to Uncle Albert's often led to candlepin bowling, a lobster dinner, card games, and always an Italian sandwich. Sometimes he could even be convinced to venture out to the Portland Head Light, to Sebago Lake or to the beach to explore low tide. A true Mainer, he was a loyal L. L. Bean patron—and couldn't imagine a need for many other clothing brands. Although he enjoyed watching the Red Sox and the Patriots, he was an avid Notre Dame football fan and never missed a game. Albert was a devout Roman Catholic and prayed the rosary daily. He will be remembered for his love of family, unsurpassed generosity and quiet kindness. Strong in faith, strong in spirit and strong in character–Albert was one of a kind, was incredibly loved and will be deeply missed. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the entire staff at Gorham House, for their exceptional treatment of Albert these past 5 years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Hyacinth Church (https://stanthonysparish.org/st-hyacinths.com) Family and friends are welcome to visit Tuesday, April 23 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church from 10:00AM – 11:00AM. Funeral services will immediately follow. Interment will be at St. Hyacinth Cemetery in Westbrook.
