Obituary

WINDHAM – Albert E. "Al" Phillips, 89, of Windham passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough. He was born on August 25, 1926 in Concord, Massachusetts, a son of Andrew S. and Louise B. Phillips and moved to Maine in 1937. Al was a graduate of Deering High School Class of 1944 and served two years in the United States Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Kents Hill Junior College in 1947 and received his Associates Degree in 1948 from Portland Junior College. Al was a life insurance agent for over 40 years. Al was very active in the Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout and then becoming a Cub Scoutmaster for two years in Scarborough and later as Scoutmaster for five years also in Scarborough. He was a Scoutmaster in Cape Elizabeth for five years. He was very active in the community as a past member of the Scarborough Lions Club, the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and Volunteer Fire Department, and a charter member of Governor William King Lodge of Masons in Scarborough. Al was also a member of the Presumpscot Lodge in Windham and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in Portland and of Kora Shrine in Lewiston. Al was predeceased by his son, Gary A. Phillips in 1994 and his brothers, Andrew S. Phillips of South Portland and Herbert E. Phillips of Pittsford, New York. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Jean M. Phillips, a sister, Betty Wilson of Arrowsic, two daughters, Marylou Bineau of Chelsea, Maine and Carylee Wiggins of Charleston, South Carolina, step-children William Wescott of Windham, Jim Wescott of Windham, Roberta Willis of Gorham and Steve Wescott of Portland, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and cousins. There will be no visiting hours, or funeral service, at Al's request. There will be an open house celebration of life at a time and place to be determined.
