Marietta F. Jaques 1933-2020 Marietta passed away peacefully, after a sudden illness, surrounded by family, on Monday December 14. Marietta was born in Aroostook County in May of 1933. Her early years were spent in Aroostook County, where many of her family members still reside. She was raised by her Mother Ella and Grandmother Marietta. She has fond memories of going to school where her Aunt Hilda was both her classroom teacher and the principal of her school. She had strong roots in "The County" and was still in close contact with her cousins there. Marietta and her sister Llewella moved to Portland, where she graduated from Portland High School. Her fond memories of that time included being a member and Captain of the school's Cadet Squad and trips to Pine Point. While in High School Marietta worked doing bookkeeping at Woolworth's on Congress St, a profession she carried throughout her working life. As a young woman, she began attending church at the Advent Christian Church, formerly of Park Ave in Portland. This is where she met her husband Philip of 64 years and where they raised their family together. Marietta shared her faith by example. She and Phil put on countless church suppers, she taught vacation Bible School and served as the church treasurer for many years. Soon after marrying, they moved to the Prides Corner area of Westbrook and have remained in the home they built there. Marrietta and Philip joined various Square Dancing clubs and enjoyed traveling and camping to various Square Dancing Conventions. Marietta spent years enjoying swimming, roller skating, ice skating and cross country skiing. Marietta was a talented seamstress and skilled at various forms of needle craft. Reading was another favored pass time. She was most fond of mystery books and was proud to have read over 60 books this year. She shared her fondness of reading with her children and taught all of them to read before they started kindergarten. Marietta took great pleasure in tracing her ancestry and has assembled volumes of genealogical information dating back to the 1800's. Marietta worked as a bookkeeper in both the for profit and non profit sectors her entire professional career. She was skilled at all facets of bookkeeping. Family was foremost in Marietta's life. Her every thought and action was about them and their well being. She and Philip enjoyed participating in her children's various school activities and through adulthood has taken great interest in them and loved being with them and visiting with their friends. One of her greatest joys was the birth of her grandson Jonathan. When Jonathan was born, Marietta retired and played an important role in caring for him into adulthood. Marietta is survived by her husband Philip of 64 years; sister, Llewella Barnes; children, Linda, Becki, Peter and his wife Gail; grandson, Jonathan and his fiancee Jenna Kilborne; and a niece and nephew.
