March 9, 1930 - August 9, 2021
SCARBOROUGH & WESTBROOK - Dorothy M. Currier, formerly of Westbrook, Maine, died peacefully August 9, 2021 at Scarborough Terrace, in Scarborough, Maine. She was 91. Dorothy Marie-Paule (Sidebottom) Currier was born on March 9, 1930, in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, the daughter of Arthur and Gracia (Lambert) Sidebottom. She was the oldest child, and had two brothers and two sisters, whom she loved very much. She attended schools in Berlin, NH, Westbrook, ME, and graduated from the Presentation of Mary Academy in Island Pond, VT. After graduation, she moved to New Jersey to stay with her aunt Dorothy (Sidebottom) Hervish, the woman after whom she was named, and a special and loving aunt. She was employed by Federal Radio and Telephone, and was introduced to her future husband, Ralph Sidney Currier, by her Aunt "Dot". Dorothy and Ralph bought their first home in Clifton, NJ, in the mid-1950s, close to her brother John and his wife, Mary. She volunteered at the library at St. Andrew the Apostle School in Clifton, and was a den mother for her son's Cub Scout troop. In 1977, she moved to South Bend, IN with her husband and son. She worked as the school secretary at Holy Cross grade school in South Bend for many years. She loved her job, and the children there, very much. Her "World's Greatest Secretary" mug was her most prized possession, and she treasured it up until the very end. Her husband Ralph passed away in 1986, so, in 1987 she moved with her son back to Westbrook to care for her mother after her father's passing. She considered it a great honor to care for her mother, with the loving help and assistance of her brothers and sisters, and did so until her mother's passing in 1998. Dorothy, "Dot" or "Aunt Dot" to friends and family, was a kind and generous woman who took great pleasure in helping others. She was active in her church, St. Hyacinth, in Westbrook, as long as she was able. She enjoyed music, Vaughan Monroe being among her favorite artists, and took great pleasure in playing cards, often Pinochle, and board games with her family and friends. She was very proud of her French-Canadian heritage, her ancestors arriving in Canada circa 1642. She made many friends among the residents and staff at Scarborough Terrace, where she chose to live out her final years. The family would like to personally thank the staff at Scarborough Terrace for going above and beyond to ensure she had a great quality of life, and a safe and pleasant home to live out her days. The family would also like to extend their deepest appreciation to Beacon Hospice, who brought her peace and comfort in her final months. She is survived by her son, Ralph C. Currier, of Westbrook, ME and South Bend, IN; her brother and true friend, John A. Sidebottom, of Clifton, NJ; and her sister, Mary Ann Louise (Sidebottom) Lunt, of Westbrook and Gorham, ME, with whom she shared many special times. She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Sidebottom, of Westbrook, ME, whom she loved very much; and her youngest sister, Alice (Sidebottom) Arsenault, of Gorham, ME, who was always spoken of with great affection. Dot loved her family very much, more than some might even realize. She would want every one of her siblings, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, to know how special they truly were to her, and how much she loved and appreciated their presence in her life. Dorothy is interred at St. Hyacinth Cemetery, in Westbrook, ME. She is at peace now with her husband, parents, and family. As, per her request and due to Covid restrictions, a formal funeral was not held, the family would like to say that all are welcome to visit her grave at any time, without reservation, should they choose. In lieu of flowers and donations, the family simply asks that you take a moment to celebrate her life, and the impact she had on others. Remembering her with affection would be the gift she'd appreciate most, to know that she was loved as much as she loved others.
