William D Verrill

Falmouth – William D. Verrill SR., died on Saturday December 14, 2022, at Sedgewood Commons, in Falmouth. He was born in Gorham, on July 10, 1938, the son of Everett and Phyllis (Sherman) Verrill. Bill attended Gorham High School, graduating with the class of 1957. Bill took classes at the University of Maine Portland and received certificates in banking courses from American Institute of Banking. On May 23, 1964, he married Shirley Ann Blanchard. Bill began work in the trust department at the National Bank of Commerce in Portland and after several name changes and acquisitions retired from Fleet Financial Services in 1996 after 39 years. After retiring he and Shirley spent 3 winters in Mims, FL., becoming full time Florida residents in 1999 after moving from Brunswick to Palm Bay. Bill was a former 50-year member of White Rock Grange where he held various offices, Cumberland County Pomona, and the Maine State Grange. He was former Patron of the White Rock Junior Grange, member of the Pine Tree Square Dance club of Westbrook where he served as Vice President and President, and the F & G Square and Round Dance club of Gray. He was a past officer of the Tri-county Dance Association coordinating committee. Bill was associated with the Boy Scouts of America for about 30 years achieving Life Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He worked as a camp counselor at Camp Hinds. He and his friend, Dick Meggison were the first exchange Boy Scouts to (Montreal) Canada in 1952. He was a past charter member of the Gorham Jaycees. Volunteered for the Bath-Brunswick American Cancer Society for 10 years and was privileged to have served as its treasurer, vice chairman, and state chairman of the American Cancer Society-Maine Division. He served as a volunteer director and treasurer of the Shoreline Mental Health Society in Brunswick. Was a former member of Falmouth Maine Congregational Church prior to his move to Florida and becoming a member of Riviera United Church of Christ Palm Bay Florida, where he served as Spiritual Minister (deacon) and became a Stephen Minister for the church in 2001. Bill was very proud of and enjoyed his children, granddaughter, and great grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife Shirley, son Jeffrey S. Verrill and spouse Suzanne M. Verrill, granddaughter Stacy L. Verrill, great grandson Dillan W. Verrill, great granddaughters Hazel Verrill, Riley Verrill, Baylee Verrill, and sister Stella I. Pierce and spouse Ted Clarke. He was predeceased by his parents Everett and Phyllis, son William D. Verrill JR. and brother Merton B. Verrill. Services will be scheduled in the spring.
