Thomas R. Miller, SFC, US Army (Ret.), passed away peacefully at 6:23 PM EST on December 29, 2024, in Dover, NH. He is survived by his son, Scott K. Miller of Berwick, ME; his sister, Elaine Miller; his niece, Robyn Greene; and his nephew, Kenneth Greene. He leaves behind two grandchildren, Devan Miller of Grafton, MA, and Scott T. Miller of Clinton, MA, as well as a great-granddaughter, Norah Gil. Born in Hagerstown, MD, to Kenneth and Dorothy Miller, Thomas lived a life defined by service, resilience, and a profound love for family and learning. Thomas enlisted in the United States Army in 1959, serving with distinction in the 25th Infantry Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, the 16th Infantry Division, and the 196th Infantry Brigade as a Combat Medic and later as a Medical and Surgical Technician. His military career included a historic posting in Berlin, Germany, with the 3rd Infantry Division during the erection of the Berlin Wall and two tours of duty in Vietnam in 1966 and 1969. During his military career, he received numerous commendations and awards, including the Bronze Star for bravery, the Combat Medical Badge, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. During this time, Thomas also earned a master's degree in human relations from Columbia University, demonstrating his dedication to personal growth and education even amidst a demanding military career. After retiring from the Army, Thomas transitioned to civilian life, applying his skills and knowledge in pharmacy and phlebotomy. A lifelong learner, Thomas had a deep love for books, often preferring reading to watching television. He enjoyed exploring the world of spicier foods and desserts, and his eclectic taste in music, especially jazz, made him a true connoisseur. Known for his quirky sense of humor and boundless generosity, Thomas was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. In his later years, Thomas gave back to his community by volunteering as an usher at the Merrill Auditorium, where he found joy in experiencing concerts and performances. He also served as a substitute teacher at the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center in Westbrook, ME, sharing his wisdom and inspiring young minds. Thomas's family and friends will remember him as a kind, intelligent, and generous soul who lived his life with honor and compassion. The family will hold a private graveside service at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thomas's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Disabled American Veterans (DAV), causes he held dear to his heart. "To live in hearts, we leave behind is not to die."
