Sena Jensen Herbert | Visit Guest Book Sena Jensen Herbert, 97 WESTBROOK -- Sena Jensen Herbert, 97, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, after a period of declining health. Sena was born at home in Gorham on June 27, 1914. She was the last surviving child of 10 to Ole Jensen and Alfrieda Swendsen Jensen. She had a wonderful child's life on the farm. She graduated from Gorham High School in 1932, where her greatest joy was being a member of the girls basketball team, playing along side her sister Marion. She attended Gorham Normal School, training for teachers, graduating in 1934. In the 1930s, one could be a full fledged teacher with just two years of college training but because there were few teaching jobs at that time, she studied an extra year and finished her training in 1935. Her first teaching job was in a one room school house in West Gorham of all eight grades, and then 4th grade at Locke School in Saco. She loved to draw; her classroom was always full of her art work. The superintendent of Saco at that time wanted her to go to one year of art school and then have the art teachers job in the school system but she knew she was getting married, so she declined. At that time females were not permitted to continue working as teaches when they married, on the theory that the job was needed by married men, supporting families. Sena married the love of her life, Warren F. Herbert of Westbrook in 1940 and they had eight children. She was a hard working, kind, loving mother and a great cook. Every Thanksgiving she would make 20 dozen rolls and deliver them (ready to be cooked) to all her family and friends in the area. She also loved to Tat and made hundreds of beautiful tatted doilies and gave them to her family and friends. In the early 50s, she decided to work for Stanley Home Sena Jensen Herbert Products just long enough to get money so she could have her son Darrell's tonsils out, but that turned into over a 50 year adventure. She loved the social part and all the wonderful people she met throughout the years. She did very well with that as her career, very often being the top sales person in the country. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Westbrook, which she loved. Besides her parents, five brothers, four sisters and her grandson, Jason Herbert (2005), she was predeceased by her husband, Warren F. Herbert. Surviving are her eight children, Barrie (Margaret) of Saco, Judith (Gerald) Ducharme of Old Orchard, Kerry (Kathy) of Windham, Darrell (Jane) of Westbrook, Reginald of Westbrook, Gregory (Sandra) of New Hampshire, Cheryl (Kevin) Leconte of Gorham and Wendy Brown of Auburn; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Sena's family is forever grateful to all the wonderful C.N.As and the nursing staff at Cedars, most of you went above and beyond the line of duty and we so appreciate the dedication to our mother. You have been part of our family for four years. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Blais & Hay Funeral Home on Church Street, Westbrook, and a memorial service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Main Street, Westbrook, at 11 a.m. on Friday. Please join us at a reception following the service in the basement of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Sena J.
