Sally L. Ricker

Standish - Sally L. (Faunce) Ricker, 73, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2016 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Berlin, NH on March 20, 1942, one of six children of the late Bernard and Lillian (Lachance) Faunce. Sally graduated from Gardiner High School in 1960, after which she worked at the Maine Office of the Attorney General, where a young Senator George Mitchell was working as an attorney. She married Clyde W. Ricker on June 1, 1968 and they settled in Gorham. Sally worked at the Pierce Atwood law firm in Portland, where she was secretary to Vincent McKusick, former Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, until her son, Brian, was born in 1971. The family moved to a home they built in a beautiful neighborhood on Sebago Lake in 1976, where Sally enjoyed watching sunsets; walking to the beach; and spending countless hours by the lake with Brian and his friends, becoming known as the “unofficial life guard who could not swim.” She later worked as church secretary at three Windham area churches and spent many years as a volunteer and assistant activities director at Ledgewood Manor. She was chosen Rookie of the Year of the Windham Lions Club. After retirement, Sally and Clyde spent many winters in Clearwater, FL and traveled by motor home to every state except Hawaii and Nebraska, including Washington to visit Brian, who recently moved back to Maine after 16 years. In 1984 Sally was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, which greatly affected her mobility, leaving her wheelchair bound for the past six years. A new home was built nearby to accommodate her disabilities and quickly became her favorite place to be; she enjoyed watching the birds and deer from her window, sitting out on the front porch on lazy afternoons, and discussing music with Brian as he played his guitar just for her--she was and always will be his “biggest fan.” She leaves behind Clyde, her husband of 48 years, who has lovingly cared for her throughout the years of her illness, and her son, Brian of Embden, her pride and joy. She will be sadly missed by her siblings, Beverly White and husband Les of Scarborough; Bonnie Moulton of Scarborough; Suzanne House and husband Arnie of Hendersonville, NC; Irving Faunce and wife Jan Collins of Wilton; and Cathy Marion and husband Bob of Scarborough and Odessa, FL. She also leaves behind sister-in-law Marge Tibbetts and husband Norm, as well as 17 nieces and nephews. Many personal care providers helped care for Sally over the years and Sally never neglected to thank them at the end of each shift. The family would like to commend her most recent caregivers, Laura, Kelly, and Jen, for helping to provide Sally with a better quality of life. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Thursday, March 17, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road in Windham. A period of visitation will be held from 10am until the time of the service.
