Richard N Couillard, Sr, "Dick the Barber," 83, of Portland (formerly Duck Pond Rd. Westbrook) passed away surrounded by family on May 25, 2022 after a long illness. He was born on October 2, 1938 in Lewiston, Maine, the son of Joseph A. Couillard and Jeannette (Vaillancourt) Couillard. He attended Lewston schools and moved to Westbrook at age thirteen. In 1957, he graduated from Westbrook High School and then from Hansens Barber School. "Dick the Barber,'' as he was fondly called, practiced his trade for 43 years until his retirement in 2001. For over 30 years Dick's Barber Shop was a fixture on Main Street Westbrook. He had a deep Christian faith and was an active member of EastPoint Church in South Portland. Dick and Ann were Eucharistic ministers and long standing prayer group leaders, as they greatly enjoyed sharing their faith with others. Dick found many ways to give back to his community - he volunteered for over two decades, preparing food at Wayside Food Kitchen as well as donating haircuts to children in need at Redbank. He served in the Maine National Guard for 9 years. His interests and hobbies included: Army Jeep Restoration, Carpentry and Woodworking (building and making furniture for family), fishing for beach striped bass and winter smelt, and gardening, growing his father's tomatoes. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, taking trips to various locations including Israel, Egypt, and Jordan. Dick met Ann in 1956 and together they were well known as a "corridor couple" at Westbrook High School their senior year. They married in 1959 and have been life-long partners since. He is survived by Ann Couillard, wife of 63 years; Daughter Deborah Mason and her husband Richard Mason; Son Richard Couillard, Jr and his wife Mary Jane Couillard; and Daughter Christine Couillard. Grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jeffrey, Matthew, Eric, and Samantha. Dick is also survived by six, soon to be seven, great-grandchildren and his sister Jeannine (Couillard) Chaput and his brother Joseph Bob Couillard, and his wife Jeanne Couillard. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Jeannette Couillard and Brother-in-law Pete Chaput. Visiting hours will be held at Dolby, Blais, Segee Funeral Home at 35 Church St, Westbrook, ME on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 5:30 - 7:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on the following day June 1, 2022 at East Point Christian Church, 345 Clarks Pond Pkwy, South Portland, ME. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wayside Food Kitchen or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation.
