Patricia "Patty" Y. Farrar

Patty was a loving daughter, sister, mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who’s light shined so bright, radiated through her smile, warm presence and fun spirit. Patty Farrar passed away on Friday, August 17th at home surrounded by her family after a courageous journey with cancer. Her light, love and generous spirit shined through each and every moment. Patty grew up on Vernon Hill in Worcester, MA, and enjoyed summers on the Cape. She moved to Maine after high school and attended the University of New England, where she later worked. She and her husband settled in Windham, where they raised 7 incredible children. Patty enjoyed designing the gardens and filling the house and decks with flowers, plants and trees. She could walk through any nursery and rattle off all the names of plants and flowers and where they would be best suited to thrive. She loved thunderstorms, star gazing and, in recent months, bird watching. Patty was a free and fun loving spirit who loved spending summers at the beach and winters as far from the snow as possible. Crescent Beach, Ogunquit and Marco Island were favorite spots. Patty was extremely social and personable. She loved hosting dinners, cooking up meals and having her family and friends in for a visit. Friday nights were sacred – always spent in with her husband having cocktails, making dinner and listening to Bruce Springsteen. She was grateful for the wonderful friendships she developed, with some dear friends becoming part of the family. Patty is survived by her husband Stephen Farrar of Windham, her daughters Meghan Van Buren and her husband Adam Van Buren of Somerville, MA; Katie Hatch of Somerville, MA; Candice Scripture and her husband Jerry Scripture of Raymond; Cynthia Cayer and her husband Robert Cayer of Fairfield; Christine Cook of Windham; and her sons Steven Farrar and his wife Eliza Farrar of Northwood, New Hampshire; and Edwin Farrar and his partner Karen Luce of Windham; her brothers Richard Dupre and his wife Mary Conzo-Dupre of Plymouth, MA; and Warren Carlson and his wife Patty of Marlborough, MA; her cousin Leslie Vasilakis and her husband Michael Vasilakis of Walnut Creek, CA; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She survived her mother Margaret Carlson (nee Parrish), father Philip Dupre and step-father Einar Carlson, all of Worcester, MA. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude with the doctors, nurses and staff at all the medical practices and Maine Medical Center who helped Patty through her 4+ year rare cancer treatment. We are forever grateful for all you did to care for her, and for working to give her one more summer. Our deepest thanks to her colleagues at the University of New England, and to each and every student who brightened her day. Most importantly, we would like to share our utmost gratitude to all of the friends who stopped by to chat, made meals and treats for her and Steve, called, texted and sent cards to brighten her day or joined her for a day at Crescent Beach. All of the love and support meant so much to her, and to each of her family members. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider making a donation to Smile Train or The Dempsey Centers. Patty believed everyone deserved a beautiful smile and supported Smile Train so children across the world can radiate love through their gorgeous smile. The Dempsey Centers provides free services to people with cancer and support for their loved ones.
