Newton G. Curtis

Newton Curtis Sr. died peacefully on Jan.20, 2012 at the Maine Veterans home in Scarborough. He was born in Mars Hill on Sept. 11, 1918, the son of George R. and Inez Beal Curtis. (The day the Red Sox won the World Series). He lived to see them win it 2 more times. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart while serving in Europe during WW II. He remembered living in Orono, Sanford and Waterville, ME; Durham and Portsmouth NH and spent his High School years in Westbrook, ME where he lived the rest of his life. As a teen, he worked summers at Lakewood Theater where he played tennis with Keenan Wynn and Vincent Price, and went fishing with Humphrey Bogart. He worked for a short time at S.D. Warren and L.C Andrew, and then went to business college. After the war, he worked for his father at Community Floor Service where he learned how to sand and finish floors; his primary career. He sold insurance and real estate, and from 1973 to 1987 he worked at the Portland Post Office. After â€œretiringâ€, he successfully worked the sales floor at Brookstone, holding the honor as the oldest employee in the history of the Maine Mall and the entire Brookstone franchise. He served the community as a member of the Westbrook Lions club for 70+ years, enjoyed traveling to the tropics with Grace, his wife of 62 years, and at age 89 traveled to Ireland with friends. He also loved and supported local musical theater, especially performances starring his children, grandchildren or anyone in "The Music Man". He was a huge sports fan especially the Red Sox and played tennis until he was in his 70â€™s. He was a communicant of St. Maryâ€™s Church. Newton was predeceased by his wife, Grace Pedneault, his brother Harold, two sisters Nina Christensen, Avis Davis and a son in law, C. Gary Hill. He is survived by his eldest son Stephen, his wife Andrea; his daughter Carolyn and her husband Carl and his youngest son Newton Jr. and his wife Rosie. In all there are three children, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren that loved him dearly and will miss him with all their hearts. Newtonâ€™s family wants to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home for their loving care and support. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Blais & Hay Funeral Home 35 Church St.Westbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua ChurchSpring interment will be in St. Hyacinth Cemetery.
