Obituary

STANDISH - Madeline Hazel Wescott, 94, passed away May 26, 2021, with loving family by her side at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. Madeline was born in Westbrook Maine on May 18, 1927, to Hazel Clara Rand Wescott and Charles Hamlin Wescott. Her early education was at the Harding one-room schoolhouse, a few miles from her childhood home. Madeline continued her education and graduated from Standish High School in 1945 where she had many classmates with whom she remained close, attending class reunions until the age of 90. Following High School, Madeline worked at the Hanold Company as an Executive Secretary, and continued her education, eventually graduating from the Northeastern Business School in Portland. She subsequently worked for many years in an accounting role at Gorham State College, retiring from the University of Maine System in 1990. Her career was an important part of her life. She kept in touch with her co-workers for many years through letters, calls and annual retiree luncheons. Madeline was always fashionable in carefully coordinated business attire, Katherine Hepburn-themed casual outfits, fabulous swimsuits, and stylish hats. She enjoyed the outdoors and delighted in maintaining her beloved Standish farmhouse where she would often be seen driving her riding lawnmower or shoveling the winter snow from the front porch roof, even into her senior years. Madeline was an avid sports fan and especially liked skiing, golf, and the Boston Red Sox. She was an active fundraiser for the Richville Library, enjoyed Bible study, Sunday services, and especially fellowship at the Sebago Lake Congregational Church. Above all, Madeline was a deeply devoted daughter, sister, and aunt for her family. She cared for and supported her brother, sisters and parents during their illnesses, most notably serving as her 102-year-old mother Hazel's primary care giver. She always made it look easy, even when it wasn't. She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews and their families, showing special interest in each of their lives. Births were celebrated with a special teddy bear and an engraved baby cup. Family all looked forward to Christmas and the intricately wrapped packages in which Aunt Madeline's gifts arrived. She rented summer cottages on Sebago Lake where she hosted her sisters and their children for swimming, sunning on the dock and eating lunches of cucumber sandwiches, chips and her famous iced tea. Visits to her quintessential Standish, Maine farmhouse were filled with games, walks in the woods and interesting conversation about family history and happenings. A short visit with Madeline was one of the most therapeutic and spiritually renewing experiences you could hope for. Madeline remained active and fiercely independent for more than 90 years. Despite illness and injury, she continued to delight in her home life by completing 1,000-piece puzzles, enjoying Red Sox TV and radio broadcasts, keeping up with town politics, eating anything chocolate, and visits with friends and family. Aunt Madeline was a second mother to her nieces, nephews, and their families and was beloved and admired by all of them for her generous spirit, her unfailing grace, and her no-nonsense approach to life. She will be greatly missed. Madeline is predeceased by her parents, Hazel and Charles Wescott, her brother Charles Hamlin Wescott, Jr., her sisters Caroline Laura Vozella, Mary Jean Richards, and Priscilla Mae Tash. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Donald Richards who has been an important part of her life; nephews John Joseph Vozella, Jr. and wife Christine, Joseph Charles Vozella and wife Mary (Delphi), Stephen John Vozella and partner Hilary Morgan, Dale Anthony Mitchell and wife Thelma, Vance Elwin Mitchell and wife Tammy, Bart Hamlin Mitchell and wife Tracy, James Hamlin Richards and partner Lisa Cunningham; nieces Rebecca Richards Allyn, Audrey Lynn Richards and husband Jay Colella, Claudia Jean Richards and husband Larry Berry, Jr., and Pamela Richards; 18 grandnieces and grandnephews, and 13 great grandnieces and grandnephews all of whom will miss her dearly.
