Obituary

John S. Skvorak Sr., 81, of Windham passed away peacefully on October 25, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.  Born in 1932 in Johnstown, NY, John was the elder of the two sons of Anthony and Lillian Skvoark.  He was an accomplished athlete in school, excelling in baseball and basketball.  John moved to Westbrook in 1955 after graduating from Syracuse University to take a job as an engineer at SD Warren paper mill where he worked for 35 years.  In Westbrook, he met his future wife Jacqueline Grondin.  They fell in love and were wed in 1961. John was very active in the Westbrook community – volunteering as a youth baseball coach, president of the SD Warren Credit Union, board member of the Cornelia Warren Community Association, chairman of the Westbrook School Committee and a volunteer at the Westbrook Food Pantry.  John was a devout Catholic and served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary's Church in Westbrook.  In recent years, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Windham. John was an avid outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and spending time with his family at their camp on Moosehead Lake.  His greatest joys were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Over the years, John attended countless ballgames, birthday parties and family events. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Jackie, son John Jr. and wife Laurie of Windham, daughter Anne Giersch and husband Pat of Natick, MA, son Peter and wife Kimberly of Windham, son James and wife Dawn of Windham, son Joseph and wife Robyn of Buxton, son Andrew and wife Wendy of Portland, son Michael and wife Diana of Windham, 17 grandchildren, 2 great –grandchildren, and brother Frank and his wife Yola of Carthage, NY.   One of John's greatest pleasures in his later years was to simply sit and watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 PM Monday, October 27th  at Blais & Hay Funeral home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham.  Interment will be private.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St., 2nd Floor, Framingham, MA 01701.
