Obituary

Standish- JoAnn Beverly Brown, 85, died peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, in Scarborough. The daughter of Thomas Henry and Sarah May (Sawyer) Small, she was born in Windham on June 21, 1932. She grew up in Westbrook, Maine and graduated from Westbrook High School. JoAnn and her husband Gordon owned and operated Brown's Mobile in Raymond for many years. When they retired in 1980 they enjoyed spending winters in Key Largo, Florida. JoAnn also enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping and traveling...their trips to Alaska were amongst her favorites. She was a wonderful seamstress and knitter and she loved making sweaters and Xmas stockings for the grandchildren. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Buxton United Methodist Church and the Buxton Community Cupboard. JoAnn was especially proud to be a founding member of Volunteer In Police Services (VIPS), for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. She was honored by the department for her 10 years of volunteer service. A recent post on the department's Facebook page paid tribute to JoAnn's willingness to "dedicate countless hours heading up fundraising events, to get the group up and running. She was one of the first emergency call out VIPS and would tool around to calls in the VIPS Kia. She continued to give us hundreds of hours of her time every year serving her community". She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Brown, in 2007, and an infant daughter. She was also predeceased by her brothers Earl Maines, and Walter Small. She is survived by her daughter Jody Abbott (Don) of Freeport, her son Earl Aube (Cindy) of Standish, her grandchildren, Todd, Scott, Erin, and Lissa, and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her first husband Eugene Aube. JoAnn's family wishes to especially thank her hospice home health nurse Jen and the staff of Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the tremendous care they gave to their mother and her family in her final days. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 4-7 PM at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd. Windham. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in JoAnn's memory to VIPS, Cumberland County Sheriff's Department, 36 County Way, Portland ME 04102, or to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Rd, Scarborough ME 04074.
