Obituary

Gorham Gordon Everett McLucas, 90, died Sunday December 10, 2017, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, with his loving family at his bedside. He was born November 4, 1927, in Reading, MA, a son of Ernest Newell and Agnes (Nutter) McLucas. When he was very young, Gordon moved from Reading to Gorham and subsequently to Limington, where his father was a farmer, and which Gordon considered his hometown. Gordon graduated from Limington Academy in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy, serving his country on the west coast and in Guam. Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Gorham State Teachers College, where he met his future wife, Madeline Stevens, in the commuter lounge. They were married in Westbrook on August 29, 1952. After graduation, Gordon was briefly the principal at the old Robie School in Little Falls, and then began a lengthy career as an industrial engineer with such firms as General Electric, Raytheon, Fairchild Semiconductor, IBM and ITT. Gordon retired in 2009 after more than 20 years as the controller for Northern Data Systems in Falmouth, where he was affectionately known as "Uncle G". He was an accomplished accordion player and toured with the country and western band "Tony and Juanita" in his teenage years, and passed on his love of music to his children. Gordon excelled at home design, fully drafting plans for two homes he built, and was proficient at woodworking. During the 1980's and 1990's, he and Madeline went on several ocean cruises, visited Hawaii, and enjoyed a trans-Canada train trip. About 20 years ago, he realized a dream of buying a camp on Pequawket Lake (Horne Pond) in Limington, a placed where he loved to relax. He will be remembered as an outgoing conversationalist who enjoyed boating and piloting a small plane, and he was a member of the Adoniram Masonic Lodge in Limington. His military service was very important to him, and Gordon spent several years volunteering at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Above all, Gordon was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and delighted in their accomplishments. He was always ready to help them when they needed it (and sometimes when they didn't). In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his brother, Carlton McLucas. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Madeline (Stevens) McLucas; children, Alan McLucas of Fayette, Victoria Wyman and her husband Rick of Cape Elizabeth, and his "adopted" daughter Suzanna Eibenstein of Rome, Italy; sisters Marjorie Mahoney of Williamsport, PA, and Dorothy Gammon of Edgewater, MD; grandchildren, Christian Wyman, Kendall Wyman, Sarah Weiss, and Elisabeth Robinson; four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, brother in-law Charles Stevens and his wife Bernice; brother-in-law Richard Doughty and his wife Vicki, and special friends Chris and Emily Hickey and their three children. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Hospice of Southern Maine and the Gosnell House for taking such good care of Gordon during the last few weeks of his life. Visiting hours will be held from 5:00PM – 7:00PM Thursday December 14, at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 76 State Street, Gorham, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Friday December 15. Friends and family are encouraged to bring pictures, and share remembrances of Gordon during the service. Burial will be announced in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Cornish. In lieu of flowers, Gordon asked that donations be made in his memory to the Gorham Food Pantry, 299 Main Street, Gorham ME 04038.
