George Albert Pednault, age 97 passed away of natural causes at Gorham House in Gorham Maine on July 9th 2018 where he and his wife had resided for the last three years. Previously he and Florence had lived in Portland Maine before retiring to King Street in Westbrook Maine, the town of his birth for his retirement years before moving into the Gorham House in Gorham Maine. He is predeceased by his siblings, Lionel, Robert (Bob), Albertine, Yvonne and Arthur. At the age of 11 months, George lost his father in a tragic industrial accident at the Westbrook papermill. This left his mother, Almais, widowed with six children. George and his siblings spent most of his first 10 years in a Massachusetts orphanage. At age 11 he and a brother returned to live in Westbrook at the family farm with their mother. After going to parochial school in Westbrook, George moved to Quebec and attended high school. He was captain of the varsity hockey team and learned to play the piano and many other musical instruments. He was still playing piano for the residents of Gorham House within the past year. George worked as a civilian teletype operator at the Pentagon in the early stages of WWII before volunteering for the military. He worked in the US as a secretary to a base surgeon general before being assigned to the US justice department in Iceland working as a court stenographer. George returned to Westbrook after the war where he continued his career in the Air force Reserves retiring as Senior Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. He worked for CM Rice and Cumberland Cold storage while attending college to study accounting. While working for the Portland Water District he founded an investment club as a way for individuals to learn to research and invest in individual stocks long before it was popular. The club was successful and remained in operation for 28 years. He also ran the district's credit union for several years after hours. After retirement George was quite active serving roles with AARP as assistant state director; the Better Business Bureau Lemon Law program; and the Southern Maine Agency for aging. He was also involved with the development of the Springbrook Nursing Facility in Westbrook. His favorite thing to do was teach others how to do things for themselves and for many years he was always willing to give advice on financial issues to anyone who asked. George was still active at the Gorham House participating in many activities and participated in the Honor Flight Program where he visited Washington DC assisted by his son Dennis to visit the WWII memorial in 2017. George married his wife Florence in 1953. They were soon to celebrate their 65th anniversary in August of this year. George and Florence had three sons, Gerard, Ronald (deceased) and Dennis. They have one granddaughter Josianne with four great grandchildren. Heading into and after retirement George and Florence enjoyed traveling. George was an active tennis player, playing singles tennis into his mid-eighties. The family wants to thank the staff at Gorham House, the Staff and Volunteers at Beacon Hospice for assisting George through his final months.
