Obituary

NEW GLOUCESTER—George G. Espeaignette, 73, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Central Maine Medical Center on December 26, 2016 after a fearless thirteen-month battle with cancer. George was born October 11, 1943, a son of Frederick and Edith (Foss) Espeaignette. He grew up in Windham, and married Astrid Harrington on December 16, 1963. George graduated from Windham High School in the class of 1964. During his younger years, George worked as an auto mechanic, security guard and courier. He enjoyed going to flea markets and yard sales and attending car shows. He was a passionate Nascar fan, and had an extensive collection of Nascar memorabilia to prove it! He also enjoyed collecting hats, license plates, and countless other items. George was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting trips, and spending time with his family up at camp on Great Pond Plantation. Since his retirement, he took great pride in taking care of his "grand dogs" Harley and Reece as well as participating in the Maine tradition of making maple syrup. George will be remembered for his strong will and determination as demonstrated through his valiant fight of cancer. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 53 years, Astrid J. Espeaignette; children, Laurie Duncanson and her husband Tom, Diane L. Smolin and her husband Jonathan, George Ed Espeaignette, and Cary S. Espeaignette and his wife Valerie; grandchildren, Hope Duncanson-Sanborn and her husband Corey, Noelle Duncanson-Hotham and husband Billy, Issac and Kaleb Smolin, Shannon and Edward Espeaignette; great grandchildren, Izabella Espeaignette and Hayden Hotham; sisters, Helen Steeves and her husband, Ralph, Brenda Espeaignette and long-time friend, Ken Burnham; a brother, Joe Espeaignette; sister in laws Carol Espeaignette and Betty Jean Espeaignette; several nieces and nephews; and the family of William Leighton of Stuben, Maine who were very close and loved by George. George was predeceased by his parents, and brothers, William Espeaignette, Augustus "Gus" Espeaignette, and Gary Pattern. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, ME 04062. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution's in George's name may be made to The Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St., 5th Floor, Lewiston, ME 04240 OR New Gloucester Fire and Rescue, 385 Intervale Rd., New Gloucester, ME 04260.
