Bruce R Doughty

Bruce Richard Doughty, 72, was born in Bangor, ME on February 29, 1944. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 24, 2016 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the youngest of four children and was predeceased by his parents, George and Marion Doughty, as well as his beloved sister, Jackie Cole. Bruce is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Ellie. Bruce met Ellie West in Bangor while they were both attending college. They moved to Westbrook as newlyweds to start their life together. He is also survived by his brother George and wife Sandra of Bangor, his brother James and wife Susan of Prospect Harbor, and his brother-in-law David Cole of Alberton, Georgia and several nieces and nephews. Bruce had two children. His daughter, Amy Bois, resides with her husband Steven Bois and two children, Tyler and Andrew, in Greenland, New Hampshire. His son, Chris Doughty, resides in Windham with his wife Sara and two children, Eva and Troy. Bruce was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a true friend. Bruce graduated from Bangor High in 1962 where he was a standout three sport athlete. He was most passionate about football and his tenacity and drive lead to him being selected an All-American linebacker. Bruce earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1970 from Husson University. He and Ellie soon moved to Westbrook where he became the first Parks and Recreation Director for the city. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in this role and continued to be very active in Westbrook recreation long after leaving this post. In 1982, Bruce began his remarkable 34 year career as a State Farm agent in Westbrook. He received many awards and accolades highlighted by achieving Chairman’s Circle and Crystal Excellence and was consistently one of the top performing agents in the company. Above all, his top priority in business and in life was helping people. Bruce and Ellie have been fortunate enough to travel the world together. Their favorite destinations include Europe, Hawaii and Bermuda but most notably, wonderful times with great friends on the catamaran Last Fancy in the British Virgin Islands. Although he had been across the globe, Bruce’s favorite place on earth was right here in Maine at the Bradford Camps on Munsungan Lake. Bruce also loved spending winters at his home in Naples, FL with Ellie. They enjoyed the beautiful weather together and Bruce spent time on the golf course with close friends. Bruce was a man of faith. He was a long-time member and Deacon at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. He considered the church and congregation an extension of his family. He was also very active in many community organizations including the Masons and Lions Club, often holding leadership positions. Bruce will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a larger than life personality and made everyone around him feel loved. His authentic sense of humor gave him the ability to make people laugh without even trying. Though the pain of saying goodbye is truly immense, the wonderful memories will far overshadow the hurt. We love you, we miss you and we will think of you every day until we meet again. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 PM Thursday, Sept. 29, at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.
