Obituary

SOUTH PORTLAND - Bobby Glyn Whinery, Sr., 87, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2017, following a brief illness. As per his wishes, he was at home, in his own bed, with his adoring family and dog by his side. He was born on November 18, 1929, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the youngest son of Edward and Nellie (Pace) Whinery. He grew up on the family ranch during the Great Depression and had great stories about riding horses, making do with limited resources, and playing sports for the local schools. One of his fondest memories was of his football coach calling him out at a sports banquet and saying that "Bob is proof that dynamite comes in small packages." A perfect description of the man. At the age of 17, while recovering from tuberculosis at the Central Maine Sanitorium in Fairfield, Maine, Bob met Thelma (Pat) Barbara Dostie, while she was helping her mother who worked at the hospital. They married soon after and had two children by the time he was 20. Bob worked extremely hard to support his family during his stay at the sanitorium where he was confined to his bed for over two years. He eventually was released from the hospital and attended the Thayer Hospital School of Radiology in Waterville, Maine, where he also got his first job in the field. Bob started working at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, New Hampshire in the mid-1950's and was employed there for 40 years as the Chief Radiology Technician. He additionally served as the hospital's Purchasing Agent for more than 20 years. He was well loved by his co-workers, and volunteered for 25 continuous years to organize and run The Memorial Hospital Annual Employee Fair auction that raised money for equipment for the hospital. Bob retired in 1994 and spent the majority of his time traveling with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He visited Hawaii, Ireland, Mexico, 9 European countries, and several Caribbean Islands, as well as many other locations in the U.S. and Canada. He was an extremely devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his wife and wrote to her often after she passed away in 1996. Their 70th anniversary was on Wednesday, June 7th. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pat, and his two brothers, Jack and Edgar. He is survived by his daughter Jeannette of Fort Collins, Colorado; his son Bobby Jr. of Conway, New Hampshire; his daughter Catherine, of South Portland; his grandsons Daniel and Darin Bach of Fort Collins, Colorado; his grandson David, granddaughter Karrie, and great-grandchildren Keelie and Von Bach, of Erie, Colorado; and last but not least, his best buddy Brady, his trusted cattle dog. Join us in grieving the loss of this great man. Bob has requested a small private memorial service with his immediate family. On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bob's name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (http://www.arlgp.org/donate/), where Bob got his favorite cat Jake.
