WESTBROOK, ME - Alfred "Joe" Joseph Gowen Jr., a long-time resident of Westbrook, passed peacefully at his home with his children by his side. Joe was born October 14, 1929 in Waterville, Maine to Alfred Gowen Sr. and Vera LaHaye Gowen. He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, ME, and joined the U.S. Navy soon after. After his time in the Navy, he worked for Northeast / Delta Airlines, from which he retired after 35 years of service. Joe proudly served as the New England Union Representative. In his retirement, Joe joined the Lions Club, which he spent over 35 years volunteering his time and giving back to the community. Joe married Mary Bishop on July 16, 1955 and together they raised three children. They shared 59 years together and enjoyed travelling, entertaining by their pool, and spending time with their grandchildren. Joe is predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Vera, his sister, Arlene Sawyer, and his wife, Mary. He is survived by his three children, Bruce Gowen and his wife Mary Jeffers-Gowen of Gorham, Brian Gowen and his wife Donna of Falmouth, and Brenda Tanguay and her husband Albert of Cape Neddick; 9 Grandchildren, Tyler Gowen, Nicholas Gowen and his wife Angela Balzano Gowen, Kyle Johnson and his wife Chelsea, Hannah Gowen and her fiancé Colin Arnold, Alexander Gowen and his wife Kelsey, Aaron Tanguay and his wife Mary Katherine, Michael Tanguay, Jordan Tanguay and his wife Jennifer, and Zachary Tanguay; 5 Great-Grandchildren, Luke Gowen, Ari Johnson, Emmett Tanguay, Reid Gowen, and Reagan Mary Tanguay. Joe's Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Dolby, Blais & Segee – Westbrook Chapel, 35 Church Street, Westbrook, ME 04092 with a reception to follow at Bruno's, 33 Allen Avenue, Portland, ME.
