Obituary

Gray – Kenneth W. Atherton, Sr., 86, died on June 18, 2017. He was born in Portland on June 19, 1930, the son of George and Geneva (Fogg) Atherton. Ken grew up on a farm on Route 202, and was a 1948 graduate of Windham High School. He then joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country on an icebreaker in Greenland. He was a hard working man with many jobs including milkman and storeowner. His favorite job was working at SD Warren Paper company, where he worked for 18 years. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. He loved children, and delighted in holding a new baby. He was a kind man, who put others before himself. Ken enjoyed being outside, his favorite spot being home on Forest Lake. He loved boat rides around the lake, watching the loons, and the changing of seasons. He is survived by his children, Gail DiFiore, Kenneth Atherton, Jr., Dennis Atherton, and; step-children George Brown, Thomas Brown, and James Brown; 25 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, his child-hood friend, and companion of 15 years, Marilyn Thompson; and his former wife, Jean Atherton. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Jane Abbott, his step-daughter, Mary Jane Brown; brother, Stanley Atherton; and sisters, Harriet Blackstone and Lucille Nichols. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 755 River Rd., Windham, where a period of visitation will be held from 9 am until the time of the service. Burial will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland, at a later date. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. Memorial donations in Ken's honor may be made to the Wayfinder School, an alternative high school, PO Box 65, New Gloucester, ME 04260.
